FACILITY ZERO MAINFRAME // RECOVERED ARCHIVE
The world did not end in a single day. It became something else.
If you are reading this archive, civilization has already survived the event that was once called the Collapse.
Most records from the Old World were destroyed. Those that survived are incomplete, contradictory, or deliberately altered.
THIS DATABASE SHOULD NOT BE CONSIDERED OBJECTIVE HISTORY.
CATEGORY: ORIGIN / SCIENCE / OLD WORLD
Before anyone called it the Old World, humanity believed it understood itself. Disease could be treated. Organs could be grown. Genetic disorders could be identified. Artificial environments could sustain life where life had never existed.
Humanity began asking whether evolution itself could be controlled.
Project Terrarium was created with one objective: to make humanity biologically adaptable enough to survive future environmental threats.
The researchers designed a self-regulating biological system capable of observing stress within a host and responding to it. Temperature. Radiation. Oxygen deprivation. Disease. Physical trauma. Environmental toxins.
The system was never supposed to create identical humans. It was supposed to create humans capable of becoming whatever their environment demanded.
| PROJECT | TERRARIUM |
|---|---|
| OBJECTIVE | ADAPTIVE HUMAN BIOLOGY |
| STATUS | FAILED / SUCCESSFUL |
| PRIMARY FACILITY | FACILITY ZERO |
| FINAL RESULT | UNKNOWN |
The first subjects displayed wildly different results. Some showed almost no changes. Others developed increased resistance to environmental stress. A minority experienced dramatic biological alterations.
The researchers eventually realized something important: the system wasn't simply modifying people.
It was learning from them.
Facility Zero was the central research site associated with Project Terrarium. Its exact location remains unknown. Surviving records suggest it was constructed underground.
Possible contents include:
The system did not fail containment because it escaped.
It failed containment because containment became biologically irrelevant.
CATEGORY: DESTRUCTION / OUTBREAK / CIVILIZATION FAILURE
Nobody knows exactly how the Terrarium system reached the outside world.
There are three surviving theories:
No surviving record has conclusively proven any of them.
The earliest cases looked like ordinary illness. Hospitals treated them individually. Governments initially considered the phenomenon manageable.
Then the patients began changing.
The second wave was different. The phenomenon was no longer something governments could contain.
Electrical networks failed. Supply chains collapsed. Hospitals stopped functioning. Communication became regional.
The civilization surrounding humanity began disappearing faster than humanity itself.
Cities became enormous abandoned ecosystems. Buildings remained standing long after the systems that made them livable disappeared.
Plants entered through windows. Animals escaped captivity. Roads became forests. Subways flooded. Power stations went dark.
There was no single final broadcast. Thousands of radio stations went silent at different times. Some continued broadcasting automatically for years.
THE VOICE CONTINUES. THE PERSON DOES NOT.
CATEGORY: SOCIETY / FACTIONS / SURVIVAL
Destruction did not end with a cure. It ended when humanity stopped losing ground.
Survivors learned how to grow food, repair machinery, identify dangerous environments and build settlements.
Humanity stopped waiting for the Old World to return.
A surviving governmental structure attempting to preserve the laws, archives and institutions of the Old World.
IDEOLOGY: ORDER
Independent settlements that reject centralized authority. Every community develops its own rules and traditions.
IDEOLOGY: AUTONOMY
Agricultural networks dedicated to preserving seeds, restoring crops and maintaining food security.
IDEOLOGY: SURVIVAL
Historians and information collectors who recover documents, photographs, technology and cultural artifacts.
IDEOLOGY: MEMORY
Most settlements are small. Some contain dozens of people. Larger cities may contain thousands.
Electricity is valuable. Clean water is more valuable. Reliable food is the foundation of civilization.
| RESOURCE | IMPORTANCE |
|---|---|
| Clean Water | CRITICAL |
| Food | CRITICAL |
| Medicine | HIGH |
| Electricity | MODERATE |
| Old World Technology | VARIABLE |
CATEGORY: BIOLOGY / ADAPTATION / EVOLUTION
The word "infected" eventually became scientifically obsolete. The people affected by Terrarium were too diverse to classify as one condition.
The term Adapted became standard.
| TYPE | EXAMPLES |
|---|---|
| Environmental | Temperature resistance, altered metabolism |
| Sensory | Enhanced hearing, vision, smell |
| Structural | Bone, skin or muscular changes |
| Metabolic | Altered energy requirements |
| Neurological | Changed perception or cognition |
| Unknown | Traits not yet understood |
The discovery of children born with adaptations changed everything.
They had never been exposed to the original Terrarium system. Their traits had been inherited.
The Collapse was no longer simply a historical disaster. It had become an evolutionary event.
Two hundred years after the Collapse, calling someone "infected" makes little biological sense.
They were born this way. Their parents were born this way. Their grandparents may have been born this way.
Humanity is no longer biologically uniform.
Where does adaptation end?
Where does evolution begin?
NO CONSENSUS.
CATEGORY: TIMELINE / HISTORICAL PERIODS
The world is loud.
Sirens. Emergency broadcasts. Hospitals. Evacuations. Failing infrastructure. Cities full of people trying to escape.
Technology still exists, but it is disappearing. Everyone believes the Old World might be restored.
IT WILL NOT.
The world becomes quiet.
Generators. Campfires. Small radios. Footsteps through forests. Farmers tending crops. People repairing machines.
Civilization is no longer collapsing. It is becoming smaller.
The world becomes strange. Then beautiful.
New cities rise among Old World ruins. Adapted humans live openly. New ecosystems spread across abandoned landscapes. Technology is rediscovered and redesigned.
The apocalypse is no longer remembered as the end of the world.
It becomes the beginning of history.
Hollow — because the civilization that created the world is gone.
Terrarium — because the world became the uncontrolled ecosystem the original scientists were trying to create.
Humanity built the terrarium.
Humanity broke it.
Humanity survived inside it.
And eventually—
HUMANITY EVOLVED BEYOND THE GARDENERS.
CATEGORY: LOCATIONS / ENVIRONMENT / EXPLORATION
CATEGORY: TECHNOLOGY / CULTURE / SURVIVAL
The Reborn world does not simply return to the Stone Age. Old technology survives in fragments. Some settlements have electricity. Others use handmade tools. A few possess recovered computers and advanced medical equipment.
POWER GRID
MEDICAL KNOWLEDGE
AGRICULTURE
COMPUTING
SPACE TECHNOLOGY
Life depends heavily on location. Someone living in a major Reborn city may use recovered electricity, public transportation and advanced medicine. Someone living in a remote settlement may live almost entirely off-grid.
The defining characteristic of the Reborn era is not technological advancement.
IT IS TECHNOLOGICAL MIXING.
Old machines. New inventions. Ancient farming. Advanced biology. Recovered computers. Handmade tools.

Project Terrarium was not abandoned.
The project was moved.
